University of Iowa LLM program

University of Iowa LLM Program

The University of Iowa LLM Program allows foreign lawyers the opportunity to pursue individualized research at an esteemed public university located in the Midwestern United states. The University of Iowa is widely regarded as one of the best public universities in the country, and is home to one of the largest law libraries in the U.S. as well. The University of Iowa LLM program offers two tracks: a legal practice track, and a research track. The legal practice track is designed for foreign lawyers who wish to gain an introduction to U.S. law and to become qualified for the New York, California, or Wisconsin bar examinations in order to practice in the U.S. The research track is for foreign lawyers and U.S. JD holders who want to pursue in-depth research and study in a particular area of the law. The University of Iowa LLM Program looks especially favorably on research applicants intending to study international and comparative law, human rights law, international business transactions or business and innovation. The LLM orientation course to the U.S. legal system is required for all LLM students. Students in the practice track are required to take the LLM-specific course LLM Legal Analysis, Writing, and Research, the three-credit Professional Responsibility course, in addition to six credits of core courses in Contracts, Property, and Torts. Research track foreign LLM students have to take the LLM Seminar, for which a one-credit research paper on an approved topic is required, in addition to a longer, at least 4 credit-hour research paper suitable for publication. Students must take a total of 24 credits of general law school course offerings alongside JD students in order to complete the program and receive the LLM degree.
