International Lawyer of the Year, Southwestern Law School’s Professor Robert Lutz, Honored by State Bar

The International Law Section of the State Bar of California selected Professor Robert Lutz as the recipient of the 2014 Warren M. Professor Robert Lutz Honored as International Lawyer of the Year by the State Bar of California International Law Section 

The State Bar of California International Law Section has selected Professor Robert E. Lutz to receive the 2014 Warren M. Christopher International Lawyer of the Year Award. The honor is bestowed by the International Law Section on "legal practitioners who render extraordinary service to our profession in the field of international law." The first award was presented posthumously to former U.S. Secretary of State Warren Minor Christopher in 2011, and the annual award was then named in his honor.

One of legal education's foremost authorities on international public and private law, Robert Lutz has held the top posts in several of the most influential organizations in the international law community. He brings extensive real-world experience to the classroom and wants to ensure that his students "understand the cross-cultural concerns that come into play in transnational negotiations, performing international agreements, and in resolving international disputes."

Scholarships to Study Law at the University of Hawaii

The East-West Center at the University of Hawaii, provides many scholarships including the Asian Development Bank-Japan Scholarship which provides a full fellowship. The application deadline is Nov. 1.

Louisiana State University Honors LLMs Past and Present, Including Prof. Pascal, now in his 100th Year

Honoring LLMs Past and Present, Including Prof. Pascal, now in his 100^th Year

On Wednesday, October 1^st 2014, the Center of Civil Law Studies hosted its annual Wine and Cheese Reception to welcome the new LL.M. class of 2014–2015 and introduce them to faculty members,  former LL.M.s, student-members of the International Law Society, Graduate Editors of the Journal of Civil Law Studies, LSU staff members, and representatives of supporting organizations.

This year was a very special event, honoring LSU’s first and oldest Master’s program graduate, Professor Emeritus Robert Pascal, now in his 100^th year, who received a M.C.L. (Master in Civil Law) 75 years ago.  

Professor Olivier Moréteau congratulated him for over 75 years of diligent and productive scholarly study of the civil law and comparative law. Prof. Pascal published his first article in the Louisiana Law Review, volume 1, in 1938, and his latest in volume 70, in 2008. 

Some of his best articles can be read in Robert Anthony Pascal: A Priest of Right Order (O. Moreteau, ed. 2010), which includes a so-far unpublished Recollection of a Life Studying and Teaching Law. 

He taught several generations of law students in Baton Rouge, Rome and Paris, until his retirement in 1980. Participants, including LL.M.s of more recent years, expressed their love and admiration.

This was a great occasion for present LL.M. candidates to meet interesting people and to discuss further their background around a glass of wine, escaping the rigors of the academic program for a couple of hours.

LSU LAW welcomes the LL.M class of 2015

The LSU Law Center warmly welcomes its new LL.M class of 2015. This year the class is small but the candidates are very engaging and strongly motivated.

During the two-week orientation program held from August, 4^th to August 15^th, 2014, the class among other activities had the opportunity to attend a private tour of the Louisiana Supreme Court in New Orleans, guided by Robert Gunn and Louisiana Law Library Director Georgia Chadwick.

Florent Brémens (Lyon, France), Vlad Vidican (Cluj-Napoca, Romania), Anouk Guéroult-Bellone (Nantes, France) and Haseeb Qadir (Pakistan) were especially impressed by the Louisiana Supreme Court rare books’ collection.

We wish them a lot of success for this new challenging academic year!

September 23,2014 Catholic University Law School hosts Fall Externship Fair

The promising equation of motivated law students brandishing impressive résumés and employers happy to offer them on the job training will work its magic again September 23, 2014 for Catholic University Law School's [CUA] Fall externship fair. During the Fall Externship fair as well as the Spring Externship fair, numerous Washington D.C. area legal employers who set up tables  in CUA’s atrium, meet with students, answer their questions and assess their credentials for possible internships.

The biannual fair provides an opportunity for Catholic University law students (both J.D. and LL.M students) to obtain externships for academic credit. During the fairs students also develop vital professional connections and information about real world legal experience that supplements classroom learning.

Employers at the fairs represent many legal paths, including positions in the government, the military, non profit legal organizations, and the judicial system.

The Columbus School of Law offers one of the most extensive legal externship programs in the United States, structured to take full advantage of the many opportunities available to students attending law school in Washington, D.C.

Each year more than 200 students at CUA earn course credits for externships at non-profit organizations, government agencies,Congressional offices, judges' chambers, law firms, trade associations and corporations.

The law school’s faculty is especially well suited to supporting its externship program. Several members have jointly authored the only available textbook for use in law school externship seminars, titledLearning from Practice: A Professional Development Text for Legal Externs.
