LL.M Students and Visiting Scholars at U Hawaii Law School

Interesting opportunities for LL.M Students and Visiting Scholars at U Hawaii Law School.

Our LLM students and International Visiting Scholars went on a tour of the Women's Community Correctional Center (WCCC).

The group was guided around the inside of the prison modules and spoke with some of the inmates about the rehabilitative programs that WCCC offers.
It was interesting to see the various services provided to the inmates to help them learn skills that they could use when they matriculate back into society

. The group also went to the Punchbowl National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, where they viewed the murals depicting various battles of the Pacific.

Georgia State University LL.M/ Helping Students Bridge the Legal Linguistics Gap

Alumna and Perimeter College Professor Helps LL.M. Students Hone Legal Communications Skills

As foreign LL.M. students huddle with their groups, Leila Lawlor (J.D. ’95) (center) and her co-instructor, applied linguistics and ESL lecturer, John Bunting, give them tips on crafting their arguments for court briefs. “Our program is designed to help them hone their legal communication skills as well as help them qualify to sit for the bar exam,” Lawlor said.

Leila Lawlor (J.D. ’95) has brought a bag of robes to her Lawyering Skills class. The 15 LL.M. students in the course choose numbers and are separated into groups to represent a hypothetical plaintiff and defendant; the robes — props worn by the student judges — bring some levity as they review a disputed contract case.
As the students huddle with their groups, Lawlor and her co-instructor, applied linguistics and ESL lecturer, John Bunting, give them tips on crafting their arguments for court briefs. “Mix your sentence structure; tighten it, so your reader is not overwhelmed; remember your word and page limits,” Lawlor says.
These students hail from more than 10 countries where the rule of law — and the language — are often different than the U.S. legal system. They are enrolled in one of the law school’s more unusual cross-curricular courses, combining linguistics and U.S. law.
Now in its third year, the class was the brainchild of Lynn Hogue, professor of law emeritus, Lawlor said.
“For many of our students, English is the second — or third, or fourth — language,” Lawlor said. The majority are trained in civil law and are unfamiliar with the U.S. legal system.
That’s where this LL.M. (master of laws) course bridges the gap.
“Hogue determined a need to collaborate with the Applied Linguistics and ESL Department to help our LL.M. students succeed,” she said.  Roy Sobelson, professor of law, now directs the program.
“Our program is designed to help them hone their legal communication skills as well as help them qualify to sit for the bar exam,” Lawlor said.
To prepare to teach the class, Lawlor and Bunting took courses in their partners’ disciplines. “John attended each session of Introduction to U.S. Law last fall to gain some knowledge of the American legal system to enrich his teaching. Likewise, I began studying applied linguistics at Georgia State, and also became certified as a TESOL teacher,” Lawlor said.
The cross-curricular approach appeals to Serge Luhaga from the Democratic Republic of the Congo and to Ripal Patel from India.
“The combination of Professor Bunting, linguistics professor, and attorney Lawlor, law professor, helps me speak and write good legal English,” Luhaga said. “The U.S. legal system presents many innovations that seem contrary to the civil law, making it a little challenging for Congolese lawyers. Legal writing, and at some degree legal reasoning, learned in this class provide me with a blueprint to follow in understanding the U.S. legal system.”
Luhaga said one of the most interesting aspects of the class is its “melting pot” of students.
“We have about 10 nationalities represented; we get along well together, regardless of the language barrier,” Luhaga said.
Patel, from India, practiced law at the high court of Gujarat before coming to the United States in 2016. She sees “many similarities” between the U.S. and Indian legal systems. But there are some differences.
“There is no jury trial in India. In the United States, over 95 percent of disputes are resolved through outside court settlements; it is not so in India, where the courts are flooded with a backlog of cases,” Patel said, who enjoys Lawlor’s approach to the class.
“She herself is an experienced attorney, and her love toward teaching has made us all very comfortable and approachable in the class,” Patel said.
The feeling is mutual, notes Lawlor. “I love teaching these students.”
While Lawlor isn’t the first attorney to teach the class, she is unique as a Perimeter College professor teaching on the Atlanta Campus—and on the Decatur and Newton campuses.
She spends her week traveling among the campuses; teaching Lawyering Skills and Introduction to U.S. Law at 85 Park Place, and driving to the Decatur and Newton campuses to teach the Legal and Ethical Environment of Business to Perimeter students. Next is teaching a risk management course at Perimeter.
The busy schedule doesn’t faze her.
A graduate of the law school, Lawlor has a deep affection the university in addition to her father, the late George Greiff, taught journalism at Georgia State for 24 years.
“Twenty-five years ago, I received an exceptional legal education at the College of Law, which changed my life,” Lawlor said. “It is an honor to teach these young attorneys and help change their lives, for I know they – in turn – will use their legal skills to benefit numerous others.”

Georgia State Law Named No. 1 Best Value School in United States by National Jurist

Georgia State University College of Law is the No. 1 “Best Value” law school, according to National Jurist. The college topped the list on National Jurists “Top 20 Best Value Law Schools” for 2017 and has been consistently ranked a best value school for 10 years.
“We are extremely proud to be named by National Jurist as the best value in legal education today,” said Wendy F. Hensel, interim dean and professor of law. “In truth, this recognition confirms what we have always known—Georgia State Law is a leader in student-centered legal education.”
The article noted that Georgia State Law, which rose from the No. 4 spot last year, “rocked the house across the board” with an average student debt below $65,000, a bar passage rate of 88 percent in 2015 and more than 82 percent employment rate.
This is the tenth year Georgia State Law has been among the nation’s top 10 Best Value schools. The article, which featured an interview with Hensel, discussed affordability and student debt as an important factor in determining value. Georgia State Law, with a tuition of $16,858, lowered its average indebtedness from last year to $64,384.
“Our students are not forced to choose between world-class programming and affordable tuition,” Hensel said. “Instead, they graduate as highly trained and competitive legal professionals who are able to choose personally satisfying careers uninfluenced by heavy debt.”
The University of Georgia was second on the list, followed by the University of Florida, the University of Wisconsin and the University of Nebraska at No. 5.
The publication’s rankings are based on a percentage of graduates who pass the bar exam (15 percent); employment rate (35 percent); tuition (25 percent); cost of living (10 percent); and average indebtedness upon graduation (15 percent). The employment number is calculated by giving more weight to full-time, bar passage required jobs. The formula is designed to find law schools in which graduates have excellent chances of passing the bar and getting a job without taking on a ton of debt for education.

Master of Laws degree for foreign attorneys earns high marks, more affordable U Hawaii

The University of HawaiÊ»i William S. Richardson School of Law’s masters degree program for foreign attorneys—the LLM—has been named one of the best in the nation by The International Jurist magazine, which evaluated 450 programs at 153 law schools.
The program earned an A+ for its academic offerings, and an A both for being among the schools offering the “Best Law School Experience” as well as for career support.
Its high scores placed the law school among the top 10 schools in the U.S. cited for academics, top 14 for best experience and top 11 for career support.
Program director Spencer Kimura  said that LLM graduates are so pleased with the program that they often hate to leave at the end of the year.
“I am constantly amazed by the wealth of experience and diversity that the LLM students bring to the Law School,” said Kimura. “We do our best to integrate them with our students, faculty and staff as part of our Law School Ê»ohana. Because they have already studied law in their home countries, they are a great resource for us to learn about how the study and practice of law in foreign countries compares to what we do in the United States.”
The program has attracted 143 students from 52 countries since it was founded in 2003 under the leadership of Professor Alison Conner, a Chinese law scholar who is the director of the law school’s international programs. The law school offers more courses on Asian law than any other law school, and it is the only law school in the nation offering courses on Pacific Island and Native Hawaiian law.
“The LLM program recently was permitted to be open to United States residents with a JD,” said Conner. “And it’s possible to specialize and earn a certificate, perhaps pursue an interest that graduates didn’t have a chance to focus on when they were JD students.”
Said Dean Avi Soifer, “We are extremely proud of our LLM program. Professor Conner’s founding vision has been realized as LLM students from a multitude of different countries have taught us a great deal and enlivened life at the law school in the process. We are also very pleased to announce that the UH Board of Regents has just permitted the law school to make the LLM program more affordable by allowing us to lower the tuition for both foreign and domestic students.”

Georgia State Law Graduates Hold Steady on February Bar Exam

Georgia State University College of Law graduates passed the February bar exam with a 70.6 rate for first-time test-takers, well ahead of the overall state rate of 53.9 percent.
“Our students earned the highest pass rate among all exam takers and the second highest among first-time test takers. They also had the highest average MBE score in the state,” said Steven J. Kaminshine, dean and professor of law. “Nevertheless, as the rates reflect, all Georgia schools continue to have a pass rate below historical norms as is true for law schools across the nation.”
The February bar results can be difficult to interpret because fewer students take the exam than in July.
For first-time test-takers, Georgia State Law had 24 of 34 students passing the exam, just behind the University of Georgia School of Law with five of seven students for 71.4 percent.
For all applicants, Georgia State Law finished with 40 of 56 test-takers passing at 71.4 percent, again well ahead of the overall state rate of 48.6 percent with 134 of 276 passing and leading among ABA approved schools in Georgia.
For all test-takers, Georgia had 18 of 28 passing at 64.3 percent. Emory had 14 of 27 passing at 51.9 percent. Mercer had 23 of 46 passing at 50 percent. John Marshall had 34 of 104 passing at 32.7 percent. Savannah had 5 of 15 passing at 33.3 percent.
In addition, Georgia State Law had two of four LL.M. students pass the bar. No LL.M. students from any other law school passed. The average MBE score of 139 for Georgia State Law LL.M. graduates rivaled the average score of all J.D. students.
